I found this the other day. No wonder no-one can spell it!
click on the post title, or here.
Origin of the Liddicoat surname: A habitation name found in Cornwall and Devon. The name originates in East Cornwall from various places like, Lidcott, Lydcott, Ludcott, and Lidcutt. All these places derive from the Old Cornish language and meant, luit grey and cuit wood.
Liddicoat and Liddacoat are the main spellings. In my own research using Cornish parish registers the various spellings are quite considerable, which include the following; Leathicoat, Leathycoat, Leattycott, Lethecott, Liddecoat, Liddycoat, Lidecoat, Littiecot, Lyddicott, Lyddycott, and Lythecoat. As can be seen there are multiple variances using different combinations of a, e, i, or y along with coat, cote, or cott.
