Dear All,
The day has finally arrived when I start my overalnd tours in South America. From here it is all go, go, go until I get to Buenois Aires in early February. The past week or so since I got back from the Galapagos has been spent sightseeing around Quito and completing some more Spanish language classes.
LAst weekend I took a quick trip up to Otavalo whrere there is a large market of indeigenous artises, so there are lots of weaving, embroidery, carpets, stone carvings, wooden carvings, t-shirts, earings and other jewellry. It was interesting to see some of the itmes, and I bought myself an alpaca sweater for $10 because I´ll be travelling at times at an altitude higher than Mt Cook (Quito is approx 2850m) and the Inca Trail is up to 4100m.
The next day I went to the "Mitad Del Mundo" or centre of the world, a monument to the 1736 survey party that calculated where the equator was. Unfortuanately, GPS technology came along and fouind it wasn´t there at all, so since they couldn´t move the monument, a museum has been created a couple of hundred metres further north.
There are some really cool experiments that you can do only at the equator, so watch the way the water drains 2m either side of the equator and on the equator, balancing an egg on the top of a nail, and the difference between having centrifugal force acting on you or not. You´ll have to go and see to work out the last one.
Regards,
Keith
